Waiting for Rebirth

Welcome to Rainbow Snippets! Every Saturday, six sentences of GLBTQ+ fiction are posted and shared. They can be your own. They can be someone else’s. All that’s required is that they be GLBTQ+.

‘Waiting for Rebirth’ is going over the limit of six sentences today. You’ll soon see why.

Damian moved forward, away from me, away from Gabrielle. He stretched out his fingers to touch the spectral ones.

The glow blinded me, forcing me to look away. Damian let out a single cry of terror and joy. Something else cried out with him.

For a moment, light filled the Navel. A moment later, it vanished, leaving Gabrielle and myself in darkness.

There was no sign of Damian. The painting returned its usual pattern of suggestions of color and myself, mingled with the sky.

    1. Alas, I can’t answer that without giving away a huge spoiler (and being crushed by the spoiler squashing foot lying in wait for me at this Cauldron :)). All I can is…this is the prelude. I largely wrote this to answer a friend’s question. She’d just read my original version of Stealing Myself From Shadows. She asked, “Why does Christopher care so much about Damian?”

Yeah, I hadn’t done my job as an author in not answering that question from the get go. (rueful grin) This prelude to Stealing Myself From Shadows and the rest of the Shadow Forest series is my answer. Although now Tales of the Navel are popping up in my imagination which take place even earlier. 🙂

    1. Thank you! More is coming. This was the climax of ‘Waiting for Rebirth’, but there’s more before the end. I’ll be posting it Monday. I’ve got two more preludes planned while work on revisions for the first book in Tales of the Navel/The Shadow Forest, ‘Stealing Myself From Shadows’.

    1. I sincerely hope I’ll be able to give you what you want in future Tales of the Navel/The Shadow Forest. 🙂 As soon as I finish ‘Waiting for Rebirth’, I’ll post my response to your prompt on May 24th. The picture of the rundown cottage? It shaped the direction I decided to go with this series. Thank you. I do feel you and your prompts have been the midwife for the Shadow Forest and its denizens. I may be writing the stories, but you kept providing me inspiration to fuel the ideas for the stories.

    1. Thank you! It’s meant to be a cliffhanger. 🙂 Christopher’s desire to find Damian again, the reasons for it is partially why I wrote this prelude. Starting at the very beginning of why Christopher cares so deeply for Damian was a question a friend asked me long ago. Finding the answer through Christopher has taken me on surprising journey, but a deeply rewarding one.

    1. Don’t worry, there will be more. This is a cliff hanger, but there’s two more parts of Waiting for Rebirth here at the Cauldron. Plus the next two coming preludes I’ll be posting here. Not to mention Stealing Himself From Shadows, the first book in my Tales of the Navel/The Shadow Forest series which all these posts are preluding to. 🙂
