Me Me Me Monday

It’s Me Me Me Monday! A day to strut your me-ness in all sorts of ways. It could be a promotion of a recent or old release. It could be a teaser from a work in progress. It just needs to be all about you. No, not you! Me! 🙂

For my own celebration of me-ness, I offer a teaser for a novel I’ve worked for a very long time. It’s been through so many revisions, I’m ready to tear my hair out, but I think I’m finally on the right track. 🙂

This is from the very beginning of ‘The Hand and the Eye of the Tower’, the first book in ‘Tales of the Navel/The Shadow Forest’. The second book was last year’s NaNoWriMo project, ‘Stealing Myself From Shadows’. The third book was this year’s NaNoWriMo project, ‘A Godling for Your Thoughts?’

“I know you’re there. I can feel you. I’m blind and cannot touch without you.” It was a childlike plea, as well as a seductive whisper. Danyell wanted to respond, but didn’t dare. He lay very still, so the voice couldn’t find him.

“I know you’re there.” Something cold and damp was inches from his face. A misty breath kissed his quivering lips. “I can taste you!”

“No!” Danyell cried, trying to squirm away, waking up as he did. Grass prickled his cheek and tickled his nose. He rolled over and looked up, only to squint into the sunshine.

A shadow leaned over him, blocking out the sun. Danyell gasped, as a face exactly like his own loomed overhead.

“There’s no need to be afraid,” Dayell said. His twin was looking down at him. “At least, not of me.”

I’m picking up right where I left off last week in ‘The Hand and the Eye of the Tower’…

“I know you’re there.” Something cold and damp was inches from his face. A misty breath kissed his quivering lips. “I can taste you!”

“No!” Danyell cried, trying to squirm away, waking up as he did. Grass prickled his cheek and tickled his nose.

Trying to Get My Rights Back

I had to make a very sad, painful decision last week. I emailed Kristi Boulevere, owner of Torquere Press, LLC, asking for my rights back to ‘Fairest’, ‘A Symposium in Space’, and ‘At Her Service’.

I haven’t been paid. Not once, since I signed my first contract with Prizm Books/Torquere Press, LLC. I don’t even know how many copies of ‘Fairest’ sold. I never learned how many were picked up through Amazon, or other vendors other than the Torquere/Prizm site.

I’m not the only TQ author not being paid. I’ve been talking to a lot of authors I’ve met, who published through TQ. None of them have been paid, either. A lot of the staff I once worked with are no longer with the company.

Doing this feels like moving backwards, like I’m unpublishing myself. It hurts. I had a high regard for Torquere Press, LLC/Prizm Books and its owners. This was one of the reasons I tried to hold on for so long, in spite of opposition from my loved ones.

I can’t, not any longer. I’m trying to be a professional writer. I need to get paid. If not, I might as well spend more time posting to ‘Archive of Our Own’, or everything I have to my blogs.

I’m waiting to get my Reversal of Rights documents. I’ve asked them via email and via certified mail. I’m letting you know. If you bought ‘Fairest’ or ‘A Symposium in Space’, I’m not sure where the money went. None of it reached me.

If you did buy my books, if you enjoyed them, I hope you’ll keep an eye on this Cauldron in the future. I plan to keep moving forward, in spite of this set back. Remember, there’s something always bubbling in the waters of inspiration, waiting to form. 🙂

Today, I’ve decided to share a taste of my novel, ‘The Hand and the Eye of the Tower’. It’s the very first book in my ‘Tales from the Navel: The Shadow Forest’ series. It’s got m/m. It’s got f/f. Above all, it’s about a pair of twins, closer to each other than anyone else, living in the shadow of a tower. Only that shadow is about to overtake them.

“I know you’re there. I can feel you. I’m blind and cannot touch without you.” It was a childlike plea, as well as a seductive whisper. Danyell wanted to respond, but didn’t dare. He lay very still, so the voice couldn’t find him.
